About Chiropractic & the Nervous System

Honestly, it's the right question — and the one I get most.

Pain is usually a late signal, not an early one. By the time your body is hurting, it's been adapting to stress for a while already. Think of a cavity — the tooth doesn't hurt until things have been off for months. We can measure nervous system stress before it ever gets to that point. That's the whole premise.

"The absence of pain is not the presence of health."

Most chiropractic offices focus on where you hurt. We focus on how well your nervous system is functioning — because the nervous system controls everything else. Every organ, every muscle, every system in your body is directed by it. When it's under chronic stress, things break down downstream, often long before you feel it.

Nervous system–centered care means we start there. Not at your symptoms — at the source.

Physical, emotional, and chemical stress can push your nervous system into a chronic sympathetic state — what most people know as "fight or flight." The problem is your body wasn't designed to live there. When it does, sleep suffers, digestion slows, immune function dips, and recovery takes longer. It shows up differently in every person, which is why we measure it rather than guess.

Research on autonomic nervous system dysregulation consistently links chronic sympathetic dominance with disrupted sleep, gut motility issues, immune suppression, and heightened pain sensitivity — all without a single obvious "cause."

They're not competing — they're just working at different levels. PT and massage address muscles, joints, and movement patterns. Chiropractic focuses on how the nervous system is communicating with the rest of the body. Plenty of our patients see all three. We just happen to start at a deeper level of the system.

How We're Different

A few things set us apart. We use objective nervous system scans rather than going entirely by how you feel. Every adjustment is chosen based on what your nervous system needs that specific day — not a protocol we run on everyone. We're cash-pay and upfront about cost. And we see everyone from newborns to grandparents.

But honestly, the biggest thing is simpler than any of that: you'll be known here. I want to know your kids' names, what sport they play, what's been going on in your life. That's not a service feature — it's just how I think a hometown practice should work.

"We don't chase symptoms. We measure, assess, and support how your nervous system adapts to stress."

Because how you feel is only part of the picture. Our INSiGHT scans measure nervous system adaptation and stress patterns — including things happening beneath the surface that haven't shown up as symptoms yet. This lets us make precise decisions, explain clearly what we're finding, and track real changes over time. You'll be able to see your progress on paper, not just feel it.

The INSiGHT system measures heart rate variability, paraspinal EMG, and thermal regulation — all validated markers of autonomic nervous system function. Changes in these readings correlate with both subjective improvements and physiological outcomes.

Force doesn't equal effectiveness. The nervous system responds best to precise, specific input — not force. Gentle tonal and Torque Release–based techniques create real neurological change without overwhelming the body, which makes them appropriate for literally everyone: newborns, pregnant moms, anxious first-timers, and athletes alike.

That said, I'm not dogmatic. Traditional manual adjustments have their place and I use them when they fit. The technique follows the patient — not the other way around.

Torque Release Technique (TRT) is one of the most studied tonal chiropractic techniques, with randomized controlled trials demonstrating improvements in nervous system function and quality of life outcomes across diverse patient populations.

Safety & Comfort

Yes, it's safe — chiropractic has one of the strongest safety records of any hands-on healthcare approach. And at NSCo, every technique is matched to your age, size, history, and what your nervous system is telling us that day.

As for pain — most patients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable (and subtle) the adjustments feel. Some feel immediate calm or release. Others notice the difference in their sleep or energy over the next day or two. Discomfort is not the goal, and it's not something you should push through here.

Tell me. Seriously. We go at your pace, explain everything before we do it, and choose techniques that actually feel right for you. A bad past experience doesn't have to define what this looks like. Some of the people most committed to their care now walked in pretty hesitant. That's okay.

Prenatal & Pediatric Care

Yes — and in my experience, it's one of the most impactful times to receive care. Pregnancy places significant stress on the pelvis, spine, and nervous system. Chiropractic care during this season supports pelvic balance, nervous system regulation, and overall comfort — things that matter a lot in the third trimester and heading into labor.

I'm Webster Technique certified, which is a specific, evidence-informed approach developed to support pelvic alignment and optimal fetal positioning throughout pregnancy.

A retrospective study found that 82% of practitioners using the Webster Technique reported resolution of breech presentation in their patients. Separate research shows chiropractic care significantly reduces low back and pelvic girdle pain, which affects up to 50–70% of pregnant women.

Birth — even a smooth one — is one of the most physically demanding events a person experiences. The forces involved during delivery can place real stress on a baby's cervical spine and nervous system, and those patterns don't always resolve on their own. That early stress can show up as difficulty latching, trouble sleeping, colic, or general irritability — things parents notice but can't always explain.

But here's something most people don't think about: the stress doesn't stop after birth. The first two years of life are relentlessly full of new demands on a baby's nervous system. Learning to hold their head up. Rolling over. Sitting. Crawling. Pulling to stand. Walking — and falling, a lot. Every single one of those milestones is a brand new neurological challenge the body has never faced before.

Add to that the sleep disruptions that come with each developmental leap, the introduction of solid foods and a whole new digestive experience, teething, growth spurts, and constant environmental stimulation — and you start to realize that a baby's nervous system is essentially in a permanent state of adaptation for the first couple of years. That's a lot to ask of a system that's still being built.

Gentle chiropractic care during this season supports the nervous system through all of it — not just the birth stress, but the ongoing demands of growing up. I believe the best time to start caring for a nervous system is as early as possible. Day one if you can.

Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found significant reductions in infant crying time following chiropractic adjustments. Studies on birth biomechanics consistently document compressive forces on the neonatal cervical spine during both vaginal and cesarean delivery — with instrumental deliveries (forceps, vacuum) producing the highest forces.

Extremely gentle. We're talking about no more pressure than you'd use to check the ripeness of a tomato — light fingertip contact, not force. Most babies sleep right through it. Older kids usually think it's pretty boring (which is actually the goal). It looks nothing like what most adults picture when they think "chiropractor."

The things I hear most from parents: better sleep, calmer behavior, fewer ear infections, improved digestion, less colic, and better focus at school. Kids often can't tell you their nervous system is under stress — but their bodies show it. Parents usually notice the shift before the kids can put it into words, which is one of the most rewarding parts of this work.

You don't wait until a cavity hurts to brush your teeth. The same logic applies to the nervous system. The growing years are when kids are under the most physical stress — birth, learning to walk, falls, screens, backpacks, sports. Supporting their nervous system during those years can shape their health for decades. We think of it like investing in a foundation rather than patching a roof.

What We Help With

Across all ages, the most common things we see are: headaches and chronic tension, sleep trouble, digestive issues, pregnancy discomfort, colic in infants, low energy, anxiety and overwhelm, and families who simply want a more proactive approach to health. Many patients aren't coming in because something is terribly wrong — they're coming in because they want to feel and function better than they currently do.

We don't diagnose or treat disease — that's important to say clearly. What we do is support how your nervous system functions. When the nervous system is less stressed and more adaptable, the body is better equipped to do what it was designed to do: heal, regulate, and thrive. Patients often notice improvements in areas they didn't even come in for — and that's not a coincidence. It's the nervous system doing its job.

Often, yes. And here's why: most approaches address muscles, symptoms, or specific structures. If nervous system regulation hasn't been a part of the picture, the underlying pattern tends to persist regardless of what else is done. When we shift nervous system function, the body often responds in ways it hasn't to anything else — not because chiropractic is magic, but because the right system is finally being addressed.

"Nothing worked" often means "the right system hasn't been addressed yet."

Care Plans & What to Expect

Honestly, it depends — on your history, your scan findings, and what you're trying to accomplish. We think about care in three phases: relief (reducing acute stress and getting you feeling better), corrective (building stability and resilience), and wellness (maintaining function over time, which many families choose to do long-term).

We don't guess at timelines. We reassess regularly with objective data and make decisions based on how your nervous system is actually responding — not a calendar or a predetermined package.

"We don't guess. We reassess and make decisions with objective data."

It varies. Some people notice changes after the first few visits — better sleep, less tension, more clarity. Others improve more gradually as the nervous system builds new patterns. The goal isn't just short-term relief; it's long-term adaptability. We'll track progress with scans throughout so the change is something you can see, not just something you hope is happening.

Because life keeps stressing the nervous system — kids, work, seasons, sleep deprivation, screens. Wellness care helps maintain adaptability, the same way you work out to stay strong or get regular dental cleanings. Many of our long-term families describe it as one of the best investments they make in staying sharp, present, and resilient. It's not maintenance for when you feel bad — it's maintenance so you keep feeling good.

Your First Visit

It starts with a real conversation. I want to hear your story — what's going on, what you've tried, what you're hoping for. From there we run our INSiGHT nervous system scans to get an objective picture of how your body is adapting. If it's appropriate, we'll do a gentle adjustment. And you'll leave knowing what we found and what the path forward looks like — clarity, not more confusion.

Plan for 45–60 minutes for your first visit. Follow-up visits are brief and efficient.

Not necessarily. We determine whether imaging is needed based on your specific history and clinical findings — not routine protocol. We only recommend X-rays when there's a clear reason to do so. For most patients, especially children and pregnant moms, X-rays are not part of the intake process.

💳
Payment & Insurance

We're cash-pay. You pay directly — no billing surprises weeks later, no coverage limits telling us what we can or can't recommend. A lot of patients use HSA or FSA funds, and we'll give you whatever documentation you need for reimbursement. Cost is always clear before you commit to anything — no surprises, no gotchas.

Easier for who? In an insurance-based model, the plan decides how many visits you get, what's covered, and what's allowed. Our recommendations are based on one thing: what your body needs. Not what a policy permits. Cash-pay also means we spend more time with each patient and less time on billing — which is how it should be.

Studies on direct-pay healthcare models consistently show higher patient satisfaction, longer appointment times, and stronger provider-patient relationships compared to insurance-driven care — largely because clinical decisions aren't constrained by reimbursement schedules.

Yes. We offer care options designed to make ongoing family care straightforward and accessible. We'll walk through what makes sense for your family's goals and budget at your first visit — no pressure, just a clear conversation.
